
Queen Latifah was born to Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. Latifah is the second child of Lance Owens and Rita Owens is well-known for her political and acting abilities, as well as her knack for rhyme. At 8 years old, her cousin from Islam named her Latifah which means "delicate" and "sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah started singing in the choir of the Shiloh Baptist Church located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" in the role of Dorothy in the production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Latifah's mother was a catalyst as she was always in contact with the school and with the music. Mark James, the local disc jockey, was requested by Latifah to perform at the dance. Mark the 45 King was asked to sing at a school dance.
